The island was taken over the arrival of the Portuguese from the Muslim traders being around for centuries. The Portuguese made Ibo Island to an important port for the trade in slaves. In the early 20th century the city lost its wealth as the colonial rule moved trade to Pemba to take advance of better sea access routes. Near Pemba you will see some white hills as the production of salt from the sea is an important way of earning a livelihood. On arrival you will have time to explore Pemba and Wimbi Beach your own and try the delicious seafood in one of the restaurants.
